The Holiday

Every year as the nights draw in, I love to get cosy to films such as Home Alone, Sleepless in Seattle, Love Actually and my absolute winter favourite, The Holiday.

Just in case you haven’t watched it, the movie centres around two strangers; Iris and Amanda (played by Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz) who swap houses in LA and Surrey for 10 days. Iris has a broken heart and Amanda has just been cheated on by her boyfriend; the impulsive decision to house swap pays off and they both have life changing experiences.

I love the LA scenes, where Iris settles in to Amanda’s beautiful mansion and befriends elderly writing legend Arthur and composer Miles. Their unusual little friendship gets me every time, so natural and touching. Arthur has some great lines and talks of things things like women with gumption and meet cutes!

Here is his explanation of a meet cute: ‘a man and a woman both need something to sleep in and both go to the same men’s pyjama department. The man says to the salesman, “I just need bottoms,” and the woman says, “I just need a top.” They look at each other and that’s the ‘meet cute.’ I just love that.

Amanda moves into Iris’ cottage nestled in the picturesque Surrey countryside; the wintry scenery is gorgeous and makes you feel super snuggly especially when she begins a love affair with Iris’ brother Graham, played by Jude Law.
It’s not the greatest film ever made and I must say I wasn’t bowled over when I first watched it but my love for it has grown over the years.  Most importantly it has a happy ending and we all love a happy ending.

*Love* this film! Is it wrong to fancy Jack Black in it a bit?
